Spijkerschrift is een meeslepende roman over liefde, verraad, dood en religie in een sprookjesachtig en woelig Perzië. Het boek vertelt over de tijd van het bewind van de Sjah, maar ook over de machtsovername door Ayatollah Khomeiny en het ontstaan van het huidige Iran. Dit alles aan de hand van de belevenissen van de hoofdfiguur Ismael. Hij sluit zich aan bij het verzet tegen het bewind van de ayatollahs. Uiteindelijk vlucht hij naar Nederland, waar hij als asielzoeker terugblikt op zijn leven. Aga Akbar wordt doofstom geboren. Als hij een jaar of tien is, kan hij nog niet lezen of schrijven. Op aanraden van zijn oom ontwikkelt Aga daarom zelf een spijkerschrift. Nu kan hij een dagboek bijhouden. Dat doet hij gedurende zijn hele leven. Als Aga overlijdt, wordt het boek bezorgd bij zijn enige zoon, Ismaiel. Ismaiel snapt in eerste instantie niet van het spijkerschrift, maar hij probeert het te ontcijferen. Op deze manier krijgt hij inzicht in het bijzondere levensverhaal van zijn vader.
